Poole Pottery was founded in 1873, in Poole, England, by Jesse Carter. They operated under many different names over the years. They started out as Carter & Company. In 1921, they acquired a subsidiary and became Carter, Stabler & Adams but were widely known as Poole Pottery. In 1963, they became Poole Pottery Ltd.

They produced ceramics, dinnerware, tableware, tiles, vases, and more. In 1911, pottery artists Harold Stabler and Phoebe Stabler started working for the company, producing series of unique pottery figures, dinnerware, bookends, and candelabra with different colored glazes, well into the 1930’s.

Truda Carter was one of the designers for the company who produced Art Deco styles until the 1950’s. They usually had floral, foliate or geometric patterns. Pieces featuring animals are rarer.

Guy Sydenham produced many popular pieces for the company after World War II. He produced “Contemporary” and “Freeform” pieces. They were decorated with patterns by Alfred Rhead and Ruth Pavely.

In the 1960’s, Guy Sydenham and Robert Jefferson founded The Poole Studio. They created the popular lines Aegean, Atlantis and Delphis. Typical colors for these highly sought after pieces are bright browns, greens, oranges, and reds.

During the 1990’s, designers Sally Tuffin and Janice Tchalenko joined the company. The limited editions produced during that time are highly sought after.

Poole Pottery went bankrupt in 2003 and are now under new ownership.
