Hull Pottery

Hull Pottery was founded in 1905, in Crooksville, Ohio, by Addis E. Hull when he bought the Acme Pottery Company. His company had over 400 people working for him. The A.E. Hull Pottery Company made art pottery, ceramic wares, novelties, stoneware and kitchenware.

In 1917, they introduced their first line of art pottery. By 1925, they were producing more than 3 million pieces a year. To help keep up with demand, from 1921 to 1929, they also sold pottery imported from Europe, plus it was a little cheaper than manufacturing their own. During the Great Depression in 1929, they stopped importing and focused on making affordable stoneware which the American Clay Products Company helped sell. In 1937, they started producing pieces for Old Spice, including shaving mugs, bottles for cologne and lotion and much more. In 1943, they introduced what will become one of their most popular lines ever, the Little Red Riding Hood line, starting with the Red Riding Hood cookie jar.

A flood and fire destroyed much of the company in 1950 but they reopened a couple of years later in 1952. Under the leadership of J.B. Hull, they started to produce new items and changed their name to Hull Pottery Company. During the 1960’s, they started to produce dinnerware, with JCPenney being one of it’s largest customers.

They ceased operation in March 1986 after years of strikes took a toll on the company.

I have a Hull brown drip large bean pot with lid in mint condition. However on the bottom it just has the wording oven proof and USA – the name Hull is not printed on bottom but it’s definitely a Hull. What would the value be without the name Hull on it??

I have a whole 8 piece set of dishes that were given to my parents as a wedding gift back in the early 50’s. 5 place settings of brown and 1 place setting of each color, green, yellow, and orange. I’m thinking they’re probably Hull but the mark on the bottom only says oven proof USA. Any information on if it is Hull and what it’s worth would be greatly appreciated.

My husband and I have a large collection of different pieces and colors of hull pottery. But I’ve been trying to find the ice pitcher or some may call it the ball pitcher in the avocado. Have several in other colors, but can not even find a pitcher of avocado in any books on hull pottery. So my curiosity I’d getting the best of me. Has anyone got this piece or does it even exist?

I have a set of four tangerine drip dinner plates, and until this evening I also had four tangerine drip small plates…sadly, one has been broken. This is not the saucer style of plate that has a depression in the middle, it is just a plain small plate that is +/- six inches in diameter and identical in design to the dinner plates. I have looked on a couple of different websites for a replacement with no luck. If any of you have a lead on where I could try to find one I would really appreciate the information. Thank you!

I have what looks like candy dish, green in color with shades of dark green fading out to a lighter green to the base of the dish. Nice and sturdy and have been using it for storing TV remotes, cell phone connections. On the bottom of the dish is itched the name: Hull USA 3/.
Love the look but curious as to the history, etc. Please let me know any info on this item. Did some research on the web as to the founding fathers in Ohio, etc.
