Lalique glass was made starting in the 1890’s, in Paris, France, by Rene Lalique. He produced glass in Art Deco and Art Nouveau styles, vases, jewelry, figurines and much more.

Rene Lalique started out designing jewelry in the early 1890’s. In 1893, he won second prize for his design of a drinking vessel at a competition put on by the Union Centrale des Arts Decoratifs.

Around 1900, he started making molded-glass pendants and brooches, usually embellished with semi-precious stones.

By 1905, he opened his first shop in Paris and was making glass items exclusively, including vases, bowls and figurines.

In 1907, he was designing perfume bottles and perfume labels for Coty. He created over 16 designs for Coty during that time. He also designed perfume bottles for Roger et Gallet and d’Orsay.

During World War I, Lalique’s first factory closed but a new factory was constructed in Wingen-sur-Moder, in Alsace, in 1921, which still produces Lalique crystal today. During the 1920’s, over 200 vases were produced. Many of the figurative vases depicted women as well as the statuettes produced.

In 1925, Lalique was making glass hood ornaments or car mascots for Citroen. Some of the most popular were heads of roosters, peacocks, frogs and horses. For the next 6 years, he also made 29 more designs for other automobile companies like Rolls Royce, Bugatti, Bentley, Delage, Voisin and Hispano-Suiza.

Rene Lalique died in 1945 and his son Marc, took over the business. Marc died in 1977, and his daughter Marie-Claude Lalique Dedouvre took over the company until she sold it in 1994.

Lalique glass is still being made today.

We have two Lalique Madonnas which do not have any marks on the bottom. I do not think they are very old. Is this typical?
