The Saint Gaudens Double Eagle is a $20 gold coin that was produced by the U.S. Mint from 1907 until 1933. It was designed by sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens and is widely considered of the most beautiful coins ever designed. Each coin has .9675 troy ounces of pure gold.

President Theodore Roosevelt wanted to improve the artistic look of American coins and had Augustus Saint-Gaudens design both the front and back of the coin. During the work on the coin, Saint-Gaudens’s health was declining and he died in 1907, but not before the designs were finalized for production. One of the difficulties they encountered was the high relief of the design, they were just too difficult to strike. Charles E. Barber, the Mint’s chief engraver, modified the design so it could be struck with just one blow. When the coins were first released, they didn’t include the words “In God We Trust”, until Congress intervened and required the motto to be on the coin.

The highest Double Eagle sale to date was one that sold in 2002 for $7,590,020, a 1933 St. Gaudens Double Eagle.
