Philco Radios

Philco (Philadelphia Storage Battery Company) decided to make radios in 1926 and by 1928 the first Philco radios were introduced. By the 1930’s, they were selling more radios than anybody else and this lasted for the next couple of decades. The Philco radio was the top selling radio in the 1930’s. By 1954, they had sold more than 30 million radios. The most popular programs people were listening to at the time was The Bop Hope Show and Jack Benny Show. Today antique and vintage Philco radios are highly sought out by collectors.

Melanie: The unit you describe was marketed in 1942, probably built in 1941, prior to the beginning of WW-II. It MAY have been built early in 1942. Hint: The first two digits in a Philco model number are the model year for that unit.

As to what it’s worth…. As with any antique, it’s worth what someone is willing to pay for it. Is this one original? Does it have the ‘Beam of Light’ record changer? Or has someone put a ‘modern’ two or three speed changer in it? Does it work? I mean the whole thing. How is the cabinet? Is the veneer intact, or peeling. Grill cloth. Intact. or torn? All these things enter into value.

Hope this is some help to you.
